Masumi Mitsui Greenway

Greenway renamed

In 2018, Council approved that the North Arm Trail Greenway be re-named as Masumi Mitsui Greenway to commemorate Masumi Mitsui, a Japanese Canadian WWI veteran who fought at Vimy and won the Military Medal for Bravery at Hill 70.

Construction at Granville, Park Drive, 59^th Avenue completed

In 2012, construction at Granville Street, Park Drive, and 59^th Avenue was completed and included:

• The closure of the westbound lane of 59^th Avenue at Granville Street to motor vehicle traffic. Motorists can use 58^th Avenue or 60^th Avenue as an alternate to access 59^th Avenue west of Granville Street.
• No parking on the south side of Park Drive, from Granville Street to the lane between Granville and French streets.

Plans revised

A community meeting on revised plans for the section of the Greenway between Heather and Ontario streets happened on March 8, 2012 at the Sexsmith Elementary School Library where local residents learned about:

• The development of a neighbourhood connection from the North Arm Trail Greenway to Langara Golf Course and Sexsmith School
• The redesign of the greenway on 59^th Avenue between Heather and Ontario streets
• The removal of the corner bulges, one-way priorities, and the diverter at Ontario Street, which were approved in 2011 but are no longer being implemented as part of the redesign
• Neighbourhood connections, which include separated bike lanes on the east side of Cambie Street and on the west side of Ontario Street, and an improved path along Langara Golf Course, with pedestrian lighting for walking and cycling
• On-street parking which may be removed on one side of Cambie Street and one side of Ontario Street

Construction begins

In 2011, construction of the North Arm Trail began with completion of all of the features east of Ontario Street after Council approval in February 2011 and several stages of planning and public consultation:

• Seven open houses were held in neighbourhoods along the proposed route where City staff introduced the greenway and heard from people about their initial thoughts on the proposed corridor. Nearly 70% of the people who provided comments were supportive of the plans.
• The design team developed a concept plan in response to the feedback received at the first set of open houses and invited feedback on the conceptual plan at three open houses held in May 2009.
• In June 2010, staff held another open house to present final plans for the Greenway.
