Gastown public spaces plan

The streets and sidewalks in Gastown are in need of repair. Gastown is also a well-loved, diverse neighbourhood, and a top destination for locals and visitors.

Following direction from Council, we are developing a public space plan for Gastown to make it a more people-focused place.

What's happeningEngagement on the public space plan will begin in late 2023

We will explore ways to:

  • Improve the network of streets and public spaces in Gastown
  • Make Water St a great car-free street either seasonally or year-round
  • Maintain required vehicle access and circulation
  • Keep the heritage feel of the streets and also improve the durability and accessibility of street materials

This planning process will support reconciliation in action. Although Gastown is an important heritage district and destination in Vancouver, its streets and public spaces do not currently reflect the histories or support the culture and presence of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and the səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

We are forming partnerships with the local Nations, and relationships with Urban Indigenous groups, to advance this work.

The red-brick paving, special lamp fixtures, and popular steam clock were introduced by local businesses in the 1970s as a way to beautify the area.
