How the project is funded
The project is funded by developers through the Development Cost Levy, with additional funding from local development projects.
We’re upgrading critical sewer and water infrastructure and making transportation upgrades along 49th Avenue between Cambie Street and Fraser Street. Sewer upgrade work will also extend to Alberta Street, between West 44th and West 49th Avenues.
The existing sewer system will be replaced with a separated and larger-capacity system, with 1 pipe for rainwater runoff and another pipe for sewage. This new sewer main will have a life expectancy of 100 years to help serve this growing neighbourhood.
Aging water mains are also being replaced along 49th Avenue between Ontario Street and Fraser Street. After completing sewer and water upgrades, we will restore the pavement along 49th Avenue.

Transportation improvements
To support the city’s transportation network and improve bus speed and reliability, we will be installing new bus priority lanes on West 49th Avenue between Cambie Street and Prince Edward Street.
What's happeningPhase 1 update and completion timeline
Crews are completing the first phase of sewer construction along West 49th Avenue toward Cambie Street, with completion expected in spring 2026.
Starting January 12, 2026, water main construction will move to East 49th Avenue between Sophia Street and Fraser Street.
St. George Street between East 49th Avenue and the laneway north will be closed during this work. Access to the parking lots for the Universal Buddhist Temple and the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall will remain open. Follow posted parking restrictions.
Water main construction is anticipated to be complete by late spring 2026.
Phase 2 sewer construction
Phase 2 of sewer construction will take place on on Alberta Street from West 49th Avenue to West 44th Avenue.
After both sewer and water main upgrades are finished, paving crews will repave the street and complete transportation improvements.
Local traffic–only restrictions remain in place along 49th Avenue between Main Street and Cambie Street while these critical infrastructure upgrades take place.
