What is sliplining
Sliplining is a trenchless method of repairing or upgrading an existing pipe without digging a trench. Instead, crews excavate access pits where a new slightly smaller pipe is inserted and pulled through the old pipe using the existing pipe as a pathway.
This method of construction reduces the need for extensive excavation, minimizing impacts to the area.
In late June 2024, a sewer main leak occurred on Terminal Avenue between Quebec and Main streets.
City crews responded immediately to stabilize the area and complete temporary repairs, including installing an above-ground bypass pipe between Station Street and Quebec Street.
What's happeningPermanent repairs beginning fall 2026
To reduce impacts in this busy area, much of the work will be completed using trenchless construction, which requires less excavation than traditional construction methods.
Traffic and pedestrian impacts
- Both eastbound lanes of Terminal Avenue will be closed between Quebec Street and Main Street for repairs to a sewer forcemain (a pressurized sewer pipe).
- To maintain traffic flow, one westbound lane on Terminal Avenue will be converted to an eastbound lane, so at least one lane remains open in each direction.
- The sidewalk on the south side of Terminal Avenue will be closed during construction.
