Bute-Robson Plaza

Since 2017, we've been piloting a public space on Bute and Robson Street, in partnership with the local Robson Street Business Improvement Association . This car-free space is for sitting, socializing, relaxing, and holding small events.

Staff have tested different lay outs, measured traffic impacts, observed behaviour in the space, and engaged with the community multiple times on a potential permanent plaza in this location.

The results indicate that the plaza is well used by locals and visitors, with no adverse congestion impacts to the neighbourhood. There is also strong community support, with over 75% of survey respondents supporting a permanent plaza in this location.

The space was identified as a potential street-to-plaza conversion in our Transportation 2040 Plan and the West End Community Plan.

Water infrastructure upgrade

We’re currently upgrading critical water infrastructure and improving safety for all users along sections of Haro, Bute, Denman, Gilford, and Chilco streets. Work includes replacing the existing water main below Haro and Bute (between W Pender St, and Haro St) with a larger-capacity system.

We have an opportunity to coordinate Bute Robson Plaza’s permanent design with water main upgrades, to minimize the disruption and begin construction in summer 2022. Read more about Haro and Bute Infrastructure Upgrades

Permanent plaza design

As part of the Bute Greenway project, we are developing a permanent design for Bute-Robson Plaza based on public and stakeholder feedback.
