Public Art Committee

Terms of reference

The Committee:

• Advises City Council, staff, the Development Permit Board, and others on carrying out the Public Art Program, particularly on the public art proposed for sites, developments or projects falling within the City's responsibility, as a result of the Program or otherwise
• Acts as a resource to City Council and to its boards, agencies, commissions or staff, and to developers and citizen
• Provides reasonable and objective advice and guidance on matters involving public art
• Meets with City management or other civic officials or agencies about common concerns

Meeting frequency

The committee generally meets on the third Monday of each month, except August. Workshops are usually scheduled for the fourth Monday of each month.

Time commitment

Members are expected to contribute 6 to 12 hours a month to committee work.

Members are expected to serve on subcommittees, which review individual public art applications.

Attendance requirement

Members may miss no more than two consecutive meetings without obtaining leave of absence from the committee. Membership will be terminated following the second such absence.

Quorum

There must be a minimum number of five members of the committee present to make decisions.

Membership

The committee consists of nine members:

• 2 artists of recognized standing in the art community
• 3 art professionals (artists, designers, gallery directors, curators, historians, educators, conservators, etc.) who have a thorough knowledge of public art, and who are of recognized standing in the art community
• 2 urban designers (architects, landscape architects, designers or others)
• 1 developer recognized by the community
• 1 general public 

Members are appointed by City Council for terms of 1 or 2 years. Members can be reappointed, but no member will serve more than two terms in a row.

Every year, members choose a Chairperson. Unless the Chairperson has served two terms, they can be reappointed and hold office until a successor is chosen.
